Artists currently teaching art at Christopher Newport University, College of William and Mary, Hampton University, and Thomas Nelson Community College, as well as public, private, and parochial schools in the peninsula are traditionally featured in this annual competition. The art departments from our six south-side colleges, universities, and art institutes: The Art Institute of Virginia Beach, Norfolk State University, Old Dominion University, Regent University, Virginia Wesleyan College, and The Visual Arts Center of TCC have also been invited to participate.

Cash awards totaling $850, including $500 First Place, $250 Second Place, and $100 Third Place, five Awards of Merit and five Honorable Mentions were selected by juror, Diana Blanchard Gross.

Juror’s Statement from Diana Blanchard Gross

It is always a pleasure to view and enjoy artwork by exceptional artists in our region. To fathom that these same artists are also utilizing their time and talent teaching in the classroom is quite amazing. It is inspiring to know that while these artists are educating impressionable minds that they are also producing their own works. This exhibition is an excellent way that we can celebrate artists who contribute so much to our society.

In choosing the award winners, the main components I focused on include the mastery of the media as well as the subject matter. I like to see the technical expertise in the media as well as how the artist approaches their subject. A work that tells a story, questions your perceptions or conveys whimsy are concepts that intrigue me not only as a curator but as a person.

I want to thank James Warwick Jones for inviting me to judge these works and select the award winners. It has been a delight to work with Debbie Maida during the judging process as well. Lastly, I want to thank all the artists/teachers that contributed to this exhibition. Your talent and time are greatly appreciated.
