Hampton Arts 2018-2019 Season Announce
Hampton Arts celebrates its 31st season with a dynamic roster of programming that honors a legacy of diverse artistic experiences. Paying tribute to the performing arts as well as visual arts, more than 30 musical concerts, theatrical productions, and dance ensembles will grace The American Theatre, while The Charles Taylor Visual Arts Center will play host to a series of dynamic curated exhibitions and related programming. Following up on its most successful season to date, Hampton Arts will welcome world-class, award-winning artists to Coastal Virginia.
The season kicks off on September 29, 2018, with Hampton Arts 31st Anniversary Gala, “Broadway Under the Stars,” featuring Tony Award nominee and Virginia Native, Emily Skinner. The American Theatre highlights include television icon Lynda Carter (October 27, 2018), Grammy Award-winning The Manhattan Transfer (December 1, 2018), the second annual Coastal Virginia Bluegrass & Brew Festival (January 25-27 2019), internationally-acclaimed Ladysmith Black Mambazo (February 9, 2019), iconic jazz musician Branford Marsalis (February 16, 2019), legendary acoustic performer Shawn Colvin (April 13, 2019) and many more. The Charles Taylor Visual Arts Center celebrates the works of Coastal Virginia artists with The Virginia Glass Guild Juried Exhibition (October 13 – December 2, 2018) and That's Funny: Art with a Sense of Humor (May 4 – June 16, 2019), among others.

Additionally, Hampton Arts and Hampton Arts Foundation will present the Coastal Virginia Renaissance Award to John Lawson, President & CEO, W.M. Jordan Company and Robert F. Shuford, Sr., Chairman, President, & CEO, Old Point Financial Corporation. The Renaissance Award recognizes long term commitment to the performing and visual arts in Hampton and Coastal Virginia. THE CHARLES TAYLOR VISUAL ARTS CENTER
For more than 60 years the historic building in downtown Hampton served as the city’s library. Built by Mrs. Grace Taylor Armstrong in honor of her father, it was meticulously restored and renovated, opening in 1989 as The Charles H. Taylor Arts Center to showcase the work of artists from throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia and the Mid-Atlantic region. In 2018, the center was renamed as The Charles Taylor Visual Arts Center to more accurately reflect the visual arts component of Hampton Arts.
Virginia Artists 2018 Juried Exhibition

This annual competition, one of the largest and most comprehensive in the state, will showcase the talents of many of Virginia’s best artists and craftsmen. It features more than 115 artworks including drawing, printmaking, painting, photography, crafts, watercolor, mixed media, and sculpture.
Jason Stick: Night Shift
Photographer Jason Stick recognizes the allure held by the cover of night. Just as a painter chooses elements to create a landscape or still-life, Stick manipulates darkness and light to cut away visual noise and give shape to his compositions.
Virginia Glass Guild Juried Exhibition 2018

This 31st annual juried exhibition presents the many forms of glass created by members of the Virginia Glass Guild, a membership organization of glass artists working all across the state of Virginia. This exhibition offers a wide range of creative glass processes, including blown, carved, cast, painted, flame-worked, fused, leaded, neon, sandblasted, and stained glass.

Artists currently teaching art in the four peninsula colleges and universities, Christopher Newport University, College of William and Mary, Hampton University and Thomas Nelson Community College as well as its public, private, and parochial schools are traditionally featured in this annual competition. From the south side, the art departments from The Art Institute of Virginia Beach, Norfolk State University, Old Dominion University, Regent University, Virginia Wesleyan College, and The Visual Arts Center of TCC have also been invited to participate.

Best in Show Winner in AWT 2018, Hottenstein is featured in this one person show. Hottenstein’s ceramic works representing her response to life situations, tragedy, culture, technology or beliefs, are knowingly created to provoke a human response.
That's Funny: Art with a Sense of Humor

This group exhibition will present about 120 artworks in all media by the Gallery Manager’s invited artists whose works display a sense of humor. The Curator may also consider artworks from other interested artists. Works will include a wide range of media in both two, three or four dimensions including traditional art forms as well as cartoons, comic strips or books and videos.
The Meaning of Life

Since the dawn of time, the most profound question has been about the meaning or purpose of life. This invitational group exhibition provides some personal answers to this universal philosophical question though the eyes and minds of about 150 artists working in a wide range of two and three dimensional media, styles and especially ideas and emotions.
