Healthy Habits & Ingredients

INGREDIENTS is a feature-length documentary that illustrates the importance of eating healthier food grown locally. Come out and enjoy the screening of this incredible film at The American Theatre on Thursday, April 21 at 7:30pm!

Attention being paid to the local food movement comes at a time when the failings of our current industrialized food system are becoming all too clear. For the first time in history, our children’s generation is expected to have a shorter lifespan than our own. The quality, taste and nutritional value of the food we eat has dropped sharply over the last fifty years. Shipped from ever-greater distances, we have literally lost sight of where our food comes from and in the process we've lost a vital connection to our local community and to our health.

This documentary will inspire, empower and educate friends , family and neighbors about sustainable, locally grown food.

"With INGREDIENTS I have attempted to witness and reflect the work of individuals who are tirelessly devoted to producing food with the intention of feeding people, and not just turning the wheel of commerce."

“This beautifully made and photographed film’s very positive tone was the antithesis of last year’s FOOD, INC. which was a scathing, but well deserved, indictment of agribusiness. This fabulous and informative film will make you hungry and have you running to the nearest farmers market eager to eat what’s in season and grown locally. Highly recommended!?” – Mark M Corcoran, The Independent

Before you start your delicious journey and get locally grown food, here are several healthy habits you can adopt.

1. Stay away from large portions

Use a smaller plate at meals to help control the amount of food and calories you eat. Take time to enjoy smaller amounts of food.

2. Be a good role model

Set a good example for children by eating fruit every day with meals or as snacks. Also, choose foods like fat-free and low-fat milk, cheese, yogurt, and fortified soymilk to help strengthen bones.

3. Keep things positive

Talk about the color, feel, or flavor of foods so they sound appealing to your family. Discourage others from making negative comments about foods during meals.

4. Drink water

Sip water or other drinks with few or no calories to help maintain a healthy weight. Keep a water bottle in your bag or at your desk to satisfy your thirst throughout the day.

5. Cut back on some foods

Cut calories by cutting out foods high in solid fats and added sugar. Foods with a high-fiber content can help give you a feeling of fullness and also provide key nutrients.

6. Make meals enjoyable

Eat meals with your children whenever possible. Let them help you prepare the meal. Make conversation about something that made them laugh. Keep mealtime upbeat and stress free.
