HillBenders Reinvent The Who's TOMMY
Get ready for some toe-tappin’ bluegrass! The HillBenders are headed to Hampton for a performance you won’t forget at The American Theatre on Saturday, April 2 at 8pm!
So, WHO exactly are The HillBenders?
Well, they are a dynamic bluegrass quintet from Springfield, Missouri! Conceived and produced by SXSW co-founder and longtime musician/producer Louis Jay Meyers, this Bluegrass Opry brings a new perspective to the rock and roll band The Who’s album, Tommy, while paying total respect to its creators. It’s amazing to hear banjo, dobro, mandolin, bass, and guitar bring the same energy and vision to an album with a full rock band and orchestra. They have been recognized for their ability to close the gap between common music and the bluegrass genre. “We have our foot in bluegrass all the time while the other is reaching out and exploring our interests in rock and roll, jazz, funk and Americana”, Dobro player Chad. This talented group has a wide variety of influences and knows how to recreate songs that unify.

“They faithfully replicated the songs, even giving short synopses of the plot at key points, but embellished them with banjo, mandolin and dobro to give the music an extra moonshine kick. The HillBenders, a talented five-piece band from Missouri, proved to be the perfect group to execute this 'Whograss' concept.” – Rolling Stone, 50 Best Things We Saw at SXSW 2015
The audience will enjoy a full 75 minute live performance covering the original album from start to finish including songs such as Amazing Journey, Acid Queen, Tommy Can You Hear Me, Sally Simpson, and Tommy’s Holiday Camp.
