Pink Martini: Who Are They?
Pink Martini: Who Are They?
Today, you may know Pink Martini as a successful multilingual band that travels around the world performing in iconic venues such as Carnegie Hall and the Museum of Modern Art. But do you know why this band was started and why they sing on such a diverse language palette? In 1994, pianist and founder Thomas Lauderdale was working in politics with the intention of eventually running for office. He noticed that the more fundraisers he went to, the more underwhelming and lackluster he found the music that was being played. That’s when Thomas decided to take matters into his own hands and create his own band. He called former Harvard University alum China Forbes and asked her to be in the band.
With about 12 members from different parts of the country/world, Lauderdale stated that each member of Pink Martini has a different history when it comes to languages. He states that they have each studied different languages and music styles from around the world and because of that it has made them a wildly diverse group. They have the remarkable ability to transport their audience from a samba parade in Brazil to a French café in a matter of seconds due to the musical palette that the band possesses. According to Lauderdale, he describes the band as “very much American band” but because they spend so much time performing abroad, they represent a “broader and more inclusive America”. In a way, this band represents the melting pot of different cultures, religions, and languages that this country was built on.
Whether it’s making TV appearances on late-night shows such as The Late Show with David Letterman or immersing the audience in a whirlwind of music in Japan, Pink Martini has definitely left their mark on the world and has captivated the hearts of so many.
