Pump Boys and Dinettes Q&A with Desiree Roots
In Pump Boys and Dinettes, Desiree Roots plays Prudie Cupp, one of the sisters waitressing at the Double Cupp Diner. We asked her a few questions about her experience acting in the upcoming musical:
Q: What led you to this role?
A: Two reasons-- First was the opportunity to work with Richard Parison (director) again and second was the fact that I absolutely LOVE country music.
Q: What is your favorite line that your character sings or speaks?
A: When Prudie says “Now most of them are inbreds but we’re talking facts and figures here and that’s just a whole bunch of men!”
Q: What surprised you most about the production?
A: How much fun we have on stage interacting with each other.
Q: What was the funniest moment that happened on set?
A: When we all had the giggles during the Song “Fisherman’s Prayer.” The audience literally laughed out loud at EVERY little phrase that most miss. It was awesome.
Q: How is this production similar/different from other productions you’ve performed in at The American Theatre?
A: The only other performance I’ve done at The American Theatre was when they presented a production I actually wrote and directed entitled “Ella at 100!” [which was] a tribute to Ella Fitzgerald honoring her 100th birthday... and THAT was awesome. Pump Boys is a different genre but just as much excitement and fun!
Q: How does the size of the cast affect the show?
A: Six people in the cast makes for perfect harmony and fun on stage.
Q: What element of the musical do you think the audience is most interested in seeing?
A: EVERYTHING!!! It’s such a well known production, I think people are interested in seeing a fresh take and fresh faces.
