The Fresh Sound of Leftover Salmon
Leftover Salmon is coming to town with their unique slam-grass sound! Jam the night away with them at The American Theatre on Saturday, May 7 at 8pm!
In 1989, Leftover Salmon was established and they took their aggressive bluegrass music (fused with rock and roll) on the road to success. Since it wasn’t so common to combine genres, Leftover Salmon became a pillar of the jam band scene and unwitting architects of the jamgrass genre. After a decade of great music and constant touring the band stopped performing due to the loss of a close friend and bandmate, Mark Vann, after his fight with cancer.
Vince Herman expressed that “Mark lived life to its fullest and he would insist that we do so as well,” so the band joined together to make music in memory of their dear friend. In 2014, Leftover Salmon released music from their album titled High Country which includes 12 songs that fuse rock, country, bluegrass and blues.
“High in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, before there was the Yonder Mountain String Band, before the String Cheese Incident ever struck a chord, there was Leftover Salmon. Formed in Boulder in 1989, the polyethnic Cajun slamgrass group was among the first to mingle the sacred waters of bluegrass and rock 'n' roll.” –Charleston City Paper
Meet the Band
Vince Herman (vocals, acoustic guitar, washboard) is a Pennsylvania native who learned to play bluegrass as a young man and then eventually jumped head first into the old time fiddle tune community while attending the University of West Virginia. Once he entered the jamband scene Herman found himself playing everything from reggae, rock and Cajun to whatever other genres Leftover Salmon decided to throw into the musical stew pot.
Drew Emmitt (vocals, acoustic and electric mandolin, electric guitar, fiddle) has been revered as one of the most energetic and innovative mandolin players on the jamband/newgrass scene today, Emmitt’s “inestimable talents” (An Honest Tune) don’t end with just the instruments that can be picked. Holding the wheel steady on acoustic and electric slide mandolin, acoustic and electric guitar and mandola, Long Road also showcases Emmitt’s superlative storytelling and versatile vocal abilities.
Andy Thorn (vocals, acoustic and electric banjo) is an electric banjo player who has come a long way from his home in North Carolina in more ways than just distance. Thorn’s energy, good nature and fast picking have landed him firmly at the top of his field of banjo players. Not only did he write the title track instrumental to the Leftover Salmon album, Aquatic Hitchhiker, he also co-wrote and collaborated on a couple additional tracks on the work. “Andy Thorn is a really powerful, driving banjo slinger who just happens to be the nicest guy in the world, which makes him a really good guy to have in your band!” – Vince Herman
Greg Garrison (vocals, acoustic and electric bass) has been a member of Leftover Salmon for 16 years. He has recorded three albums with the band and performs at venues and festivals across the country such as Red Rocks, Telluride Bluegrass, High Sierra, and Bonnaroo.
Alwyn Robinson (drums) studied classical percussion as well as marching percussion from his early years through college, and began playing drum set with local bands in Marshall around fourteen. While studying at Texas Tech University and CU Boulder, he performed in various musical ensembles and studied a broad range of musical styles, from classical percussion to steel drum music. “Alwyn not only fills Jose’ Martinez’s [former band member] shoes but his incredible chops and ears are going to propel the next era of Salmon’s growth.”- Vince Herman
