The Second City: Cure for the Common Comedy

The Legendary Sketch and Improv Comedy Theater

The Second City opened its doors on a snowy Chicago night in December of 1959. No one could have guessed that this small cabaret theatre would become the most influential and prolific comedy theatre in the world. With famous names like Mike Meyers, Tina Fey, Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, and Jordan Peele having graced The Second City stage, the improvisation-based theater troupe is known for launching the careers of generation after generation of comedy’s best and brightest.

Did you know? In 2015, Rolling Stone ranked The Second City alumni John Belushi as the most important cast member in the history of Saturday Night Live

At a time when mother-in-law jokes were more the fashion, The Second City railed against the conformist culture with scenes that spoke to a younger generation. Audiences can always expect timely references to current events as well as classic comedy that is at the core of The Second City’s repertoire. Edgy, thought-provoking, and always spectacularly funny, The Second City is celebrating over 50 years of producing cutting-edge satirical revues.
