The Tibetan monks of Drepung Loseling Monastery return to create a sand-painted mandala, which is used to re-consecrate the earth and its inhabitants. As the mandala is created and deconstructed, the sands are taken to the water, and from there, it spreads throughout the world for planetary healing!

Artists from across the Commonwealth who work in all styles, genres, and media are invited to submit artworks for consideration. This year’s juror is Dr. Christopher C. Oliver, Bev Perdue Jennings Associate Curator of American Art at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond. The juried exhibition features cash prizes awarded to First ($1,000), Second ($750), and Third ($500) Places as well as Awards of Distinction and Honorable Mentions.

IMG_7581.JPGThis widely observed holiday focuses on remembering family members and friends who have passed away. This originates from the ancient indigenous peoples of Mexico who believed that the souls of the dead return each year to visit with their living relatives – to eat, drink, and be merry. 

This free event includes a traditional colored straw demonstration by Cesar Carbajal as well as the preparation of an altar where members of the community can share a prayer, light a candle, or bring a memento to place as an offering for loved ones. Craft stations include making paper marigolds, Day of the Dead masks, and creating papel picado. Food trucks will be onsite.

These miniature creations can pack a punch in terms of artistic value and emotional impact. They offer a unique opportunity for artists to explore different mediums and techniques more intimately and concisely. Despite their diminutive size, small works of art can leave a lasting impression on those who view them, showcasing the skill, creativity, and imagination of the artist behind them.

Small works of art are also often more affordable, making them accessible to a wider range of collectors and enthusiasts. This juried exhibition is open to all Coastal Virginia and Virginia artists. Awards are given for First ($200), Second ($150), and Third ($100) Places along with Awards of Merit for Small Works and Miniatures.
